Speech and Language

The goal of SEARCH Day Program's Speech and Language Department is to establish relevant, meaningful, and enjoyable communication based on best practice programming that follows each student from childhood through adulthood. We strive to generalize communication skills within natural environmental settings to enhance each individual’s quality of life.

New referrals are assessed using a variety of informal assessments in order to establish a communication baseline from which possible IEP goals and objectives are derived.

We use a team approach when establishing or modifying a student’s program. This team includes the speech language specialist, classroom teacher, principal, as well as professionals from the student’s school district. A student’s family is an integral component of this team. The information garnered from family members is used to provide the most comprehensive program appropriate to each student.

SEARCH offers a variety of communication-based programs that are tailored to the individual learning style of each student. These programs include, but are not limited to, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Verbal Behavior (VB), Total Communication (TC), and Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC).  Oral Motor Therapy, PROMPT Therapy, and Dysphagia/Swallowing Therapy are also implemented when appropriate.

Parents are trained in the fundamental principles of these systems, given hands-on-experience, guidance, and consultation to ensure their child’s success.

"He came in a toddler who couldn't speak or express himself and he is leaving an expressive, caring young boy...SEARCH has unlocked so much potential within him." ~Parent
